Holidays with Family

We did not really have holidays but we had days out. We would walk over to visit Grandad in Hutton Henry or walk to Crimdon on a Bank Holiday, or to the local beaches in Horden /Easington. We walked a lot because we were a family of bad travellers on the bus.

We did when small and Dad was still in the army travel by train up to the North East when Dad was on leave to stay with Grandad and Nana. We would travel up in a train that reminded you of The Hogwarts Express.

I remember my mum taking me to visit Aunty Dot/Uncle John who was a milkman and my cousin Ann. They lived in a village called Knockin near Welshpool on the Borders of Wales. I remember the most delicious cake in a charming tea shop. I got to know my cousin better and my mum spent time with her sister.

I grew up and married and moved down South. Hubby always promised that when we came down South to live we would go up North as often as we were able too…so a few times we used to travel up overnight by coach. I will never forget the first time with son no 1 age 4 months so he could meet his grandparents for the first time. I also remember the looks I had when I climbed up into the overnight coach with a babe in arms….and the thanks at the end of the journey and comments ” He has been a lovely quiet baby”…. he had slept all the way.  Spent a lovely time showing off our baby.

Had a holiday another year with 3 small children….then we managed to have a few holidays staying in a caravan in South Sheilds which we used as a base so we could see family.

We also had a holiday a couple of times in the Isle of Wight….once in a caravan in Shanklin and once in a flat in Ryde. All very enjoyable memories.

Also, a week in Pagham Sussex before son no3 was born. We had another caravan holiday when the children were small but I cannot remember where it was.

Finally…another Isle of Wight holiday in a chalet with hubby’s oldest sister and hubby…and its true what they say about holidays with family.

No holidays abroad….no holidays in fancy hotels….not really bothered… Until next time…Bye…Just remembered the one I forgot….yes another caravan….this time on Hayling Island xx
