Some Of My Classic Reads.

Since I started reading the classics I have notes in the back of my classic project book (that’s what I call it…I put all sorts in it. I have become quite obsessed with it and the number of books in my pile well outnumbers the amount I  have read. They are not so that I read them. In this list, I have read 27 books and I have written a little description of what I felt.

I will list them from 1 onwards…

1. Earth Abides. George R Stewart—This is not classed as a classic but I feel it should be. I have written in my notes that it was my 3rd reading of this which shows that it is a favourite read. Written end 40’s and beginning 50’s.The main character is “Isherwood Williams” who is a geology student the book starts with him being bitten by a snake and he becomes very ill in a lonesome cabin. When he is well enough to leave the drives back down to the near garage to discover that no one is there. Discovers a week-old paper that says that worldwide a disease has wiped out millions. He panics and drives back to his home in San Francisco to discover his parents have gone and he sees nobody. He goes searching for people only finding a few that he felt was not the kind of people he wanted to rebuild a new life with. I did find “Is” was snobby about his intelligence. He eventually started to rebuild a little community. I loved all the first main characters…Emma,Ezra,George ,Mollie.A lot of it is observations rather that the fight for survival. Even as we come through a pandemic it was still a good read for Me and if you like survival-type stories …it is a good one.

2. The Quiet American.Graham Greene—Only Grahame Green I have read. At first, I would enjoy this book, but I did and gave it a 9/10. Thomas was my favourite character..an English journalist who was near retirement age.” Pyle” was “The Quiet American” who fell in love with Thomas’s woman. It was set during the Vietnam war. Quite violent in places. I would like to see this as a movie.

3. The Picture of Dorian Grey…Oscar Wilde.—I was so excited when this was my random pick(how I choose what to read). I had seen good reviews on Booktube. I found it quite dull, he was a pompous young man horrified at the thought of singing. An artist painted a picture of him. He was a beautiful man. Dorien gazes at this picture all the time and sort of sells his soul to the devil. I saw on booktube that someone had found it boring and I had to agree with him.

4. Fantastic Mr Fox…Roald Dahl—A really quick read. I read it out loud to Ron and he enjoyed listening to it was the first time I had done that and it’s a beautiful memory for us both.

just a few I wanted to share. At the moment I have almost finished “War Horse”. Ones I am looking forward to reading but I will wait till they get randomly picked…
